Bass by Kayak
Bass by Kayak follows a small expedition party as they sea-kayak from the Australian mainland to Tasmania, linking the perfectly spaced islands of Bass Strait in a crossing that has become a rite of passage for seafarers. Only a few hundred people have made it in the modern era — and Aboriginal Australians made it by canoe during the last ice age. Narrated by adventure filmmaker Beau Miles in the first ever feature film of the crossing by sea kayak, it is a story of chafe and bad cooking, a sudden storm, spectacular open water, and a mateship that emerges between men who barely know each other.
Why This Film Matters: Beneath the spectacular footage of Bass Strait, Bass by Kayak is a quietly honest portrait of endurance and companionship — what it takes, physically and emotionally, to commit to a hard crossing with strangers. Award-winning on the paddling-film circuit, it captures adventure at its most human: unglamorous, uncertain and deeply rewarding.
