The Illusion of Abundance
The Illusion of Abundance follows three women leading the resistance against the extractive industries and multinational corporations the film calls the 'new conquistadors.' Máxima Acuña, a Peruvian peasant farmer, refuses to leave land coveted by the Yanacocha gold mine; Carolina, a Brazilian activist, seeks justice after the Brumadinho tailings-dam collapse; and Bertha, daughter of murdered Honduran defender Berta Cáceres, pursues her mother's killers through the European courts. Directed by Erika González Ramírez and Matthieu Lietaert, the film traces how local struggles have become global lawsuits reaching all the way to Europe.
Why This Film Matters: The Illusion of Abundance puts a human face on the true cost of 'development,' following ordinary women who refuse to be silenced as they confront some of the world's most powerful companies. Winner of the Amnesty International Award among many others, it is a clear-eyed look at environmental defence, corporate accountability and the courage it takes to fight back.
