Banjos Bluegrass Squirrel Barkers Trailer

When people think of bluegrass, they think of Appalachia. They don't think of San Diego. Banjos, Bluegrass and Squirrel Barkers sets out to correct that — tracing the remarkable musical scene that emerged in California in the early 1960s, when the folk music revival collided with traditional bluegrass and produced something entirely its own. At the center of it all were the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, a local group that launched the careers of Chris Hillman (who would co-found the Byrds), Bernie Leadon (the Eagles), and Mason Williams ('Classical Gas'). The film follows the scene from those formative years to the present, featuring interviews with the players who were there.
Why This Film Matters: The story of California bluegrass is a story about how American music actually spreads — not through official channels or industry machinery, but through communities of young people sharing what they love in living rooms, local clubs, and parking lots. At a time when streaming algorithms flatten musical history into curated playlists and the origins of genres get lost behind the biggest names, this documentary is a reminder that musical roots are always messier, wider, and more surprising than the official story allows.
